What is Gasification?
Gasification is a process that converts organic or fossil fuel-based carbonaceous materials, such as coal, biomass, or waste, into synthetic gas (syngas). This is achieved by reacting the material at high temperatures (typically above 700°C) with a controlled amount of oxygen and/or steam. Unlike combustion, which burns the material with excess oxygen to produce heat, gasification operates with limited oxygen, resulting in a mixture of gases rather than complete combustion.
The resulting **syngas** is primarily made up of:
- Hydrogen (H2)
- Carbon monoxide (CO)
- Small amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and other trace gases.
Uses of Syngas
- It can be burned for electricity generation.
- Used as a feedstock for producing chemicals, fertilizers, and liquid fuels (through processes like Fischer-Tropsch synthesis).
- Can be converted into Hydrogen (H2) for fuel cells or industrial processes.
Gasification is considered a more efficient and cleaner method for using carbon-based materials, as it allows for the removal of pollutants (like sulfur and mercury) before combustion, making it more environmentally friendly compared to traditional burning methods.
