What is Natural Gas?

Natural gas is a fossil fuel composed primarily of methane (CH₄), along with small amounts of other hydrocarbons such as ethane, propane, and butane. It forms deep beneath the Earth's surface through the decomposition of organic material over millions of years, subjected to intense heat and pressure.

Natural gas is used as an energy source for heating, electricity generation, and as a fuel for vehicles. It burns cleaner than coal and oil, producing less carbon dioxide and other pollutants, making it a relatively cleaner fossil fuel option. Additionally, it serves as a raw material in the production of chemicals, fertilizers, and hydrogen.

Natural gas comes from deep within the Earth's crust, where it forms over millions of years from the remains of ancient marine plants and animals. These organic materials are buried under layers of sediment and rock. Under intense heat and pressure, they undergo chemical changes, gradually transforming into natural gas and other fossil fuels like oil and coal.

The primary sources of natural gas are:

  1. Conventional Natural Gas Fields: Found in porous rock formations, often trapped with crude oil, known as associated natural gas, or by itself, called non-associated natural gas.
  2. Shale Gas: Found in shale rock formations, extracted through hydraulic fracturing (fracking).
  3. Coalbed Methane: Found in coal seams, extracted from coal deposits.
  4. Biogenic Gas: Formed closer to the surface by biological processes, such as microbial decomposition in landfills or marshes.

Natural gas is typically extracted through drilling, and then processed to remove impurities before it is transported via pipelines or liquefied for export.
